Cognitive Behavioral Therapies |
This type of therapy involves understanding the nature of maladaptive thought and behavioral patterns that perpetuates dysfunctional being. The patient is actively involved in monitoring, recognizing, and changing these patterns using psychological strategies and techniques.
This is a widely researched, time-limited psychotherapeutic approach that has been shown to be effective for a variety of mental and behavioral problems. CBT works by changing people’s attitudes and their behavior by focusing on a person’s thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes and how these relate to the way a person behaves, as a way of dealing with emotional problems. The patient and therapist work together to understand what the problems are and to develop new strategies for tackling them. Patients are then introduced to a set of techniques and principles that they can use independently. |
Psychodynamic Therapies |
The Psychodynamic approach focuses on understanding how personal histories and development exert psychological forces on the individual, keeping in place certain unhealthy behaviors and emotions. The therapist works closely with the individual to uncover the negative forces that affect a person's overall well being. This style of therapy promotes patient engagement in order to reach desired goals.

Some examples include relaxation and mindfulness for relaxation and stress management, biofeedback or hypnosis techniques for healing. These approaches often involve individualized skills formulated to fit the patient's specific needs. The clinician works with the patient to develop skills to help patient's lessen their anxiety. Biofeedback provides physiological information for the individual to change dysfunctional patterns. Hypnosis is a technique to access unconscious aspects of psyche to change negative behaviors or reveal otherwise unknown aspects of self.
